Methods to Travel to Petra, Jordan
By Air
The fastest and most common way to get to Petra is by flying into Jordan. King Hussein International Airport (AQJ) in Aqaba is the closest airport to Petra, located about 125 kilometers (around 78 miles) away. If you’re flying internationally, you may also land at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman, the capital, which is about a 3-hour drive from Petra. From either airport, you can take a taxi, rent a car, or use a shuttle service to reach Petra.
By Bus
If you’re traveling from Amman, the Jordanian capital, taking a bus is an affordable and convenient way to reach Petra. The JETT Bus service offers daily departures from Amman to Petra, and the journey takes about 3 hours. The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and offer a smooth ride, making it a popular choice for tourists.
By Car
Driving to Petra gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. The roads from Amman to Petra are well-maintained, and the distance is about 235 kilometers (around 146 miles), taking roughly 3 hours by car. Renting a car is an excellent choice if you want to visit other attractions in Jordan, like Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea, on your way to or from Petra.

Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Petra, as the weather is mild and pleasant. With temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), you can comfortably explore Petra without the extreme heat of summer.
